Helix Micro Rebar was originally developed by engineers at University of Michigan in response to a request from the U.S. military. In the early 2000s, with conflicts in the Middle East and the threat of terrorism at home, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers needed a more blast-resistant concrete. In response, UM researchers created Helix, a twisted steel micro rebar technology that replaces most rebar and creates a concrete that is stronger and less resistant to cracking.
For nearly two decades, Helix has enhanced the performance of flatwork, slabs, foundations, tunnels, and a wide range of above-grade applications. Now, after years of real-world testing in the most demanding applications around the world, Helix is available for your construction project.
How it Works
Because of its patented twisted shape, Helix bonds tenaciously with the concrete matrix and is anchored securely into place. Made from high tensile steel, it’s exceptionally high modulus of rupture stops concrete cracking at the microscopic level. Unlike rebar, mesh and fibers, Helix works before the concrete fails. It is the only reinforcement approved to replace structural reinforcement in concrete with a simple design method.
Helix Twisted Steel Micro Rebar can be added at the jobsite or at the batch plant for convenience and precision, and can be pumped just like traditional mix designs.
The product is available in two different grades. Helix 5-25 is a code-approved corrosion-resistant product with nearly two decades of proven success in structural applications. Helix 8-50 is intended to replace other types of fiber reinforcement in industrial slabs and underground works. Both products increase the modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of the concrete.

He has developed, built, and owned commercial real estate throughout the northeast, completing more than $250M in projects over the past three decades for clients such as SUNOCO, Cendant Corporation, Choice Hotels, Hilton Corporation, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriot Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, and others.
He specializes in high-performance solutions using sustainable products, and provides value engineering services to maximize financial and performance efficiencies. A veteran of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine force, Mike has held master electrical licenses and is a master ICF manager/installer. Since the early 2000’s, he has been one of the ICF industry’s biggest ambassadors.
STEVE BLUESTONE is a partner in The Bluestone Organization, a real estate development firm focused on the development and construction of large, affordable, multifamily residential buildings. Bluestone specializes in market-rate Passive House-certified developments built using off-the-shelf components at little to no extra cost. He is experienced with combining Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) technology with Helix Steel Micro Rebars to reduce cost/weight/material, shorten schedules, and increase the strength and quality of buildings from low- to high-rise.
He is also advancing the use of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) in cold climates. In 2015 he completed his own home using AAC, which was the first AAC building in the Americas to be certified Passive House by Passive House Institute US (PHIUS).
